First Scholarship Awarded to a Detroit Youth:
Lets Start a Trend

The National Network on Cuba, an organization that oppose the U.S. blockade and travel ban to Cuba and support normalized relations with the U.S., awarded its very first scholarship for Cuba Travel on March 21 in Detroit. Co-chair Cheryl LaBash presented recipient Makini Kweli, with a $500 check to help with her travel cost. Makini will be traveling to Cuba next month as part of the 13th International May Day Brigade and is very excited. This is her first trip to the island.

The presentation was hosted by Miller Grove Block Club President Jackuline McKinney and included Mike Shane who participated in October’s Footsteps of Che Brigade in Cuba, Makini’s mother Mezzakemet Kweli and Detroit-based Cuban artist Charlene Uresy. Todd the budding drummer opened the presentation.
